CAS Watercolour Challenge Sept. 2019 Guest Designer

Welcome to CAS Watercolor Challenge for Sept. 2019! I have the great pleasure of being the Guest Designer this month. Here is my winning card from the July challenge:

Before I create a card, I usually spend some time mulling over how I want to create it and what stamps I want to use. Since this is a watercolor challenge, I knew I wanted to use Stampin' Up!'s Pigment Sprinkles. I have used them for several blogs lately and I am really enjoying their versatility and vibrancy.

Pigment Sprinkles are watercolor pigment crystals in exclusive Stampin' Up! colors. Mix them with water to make watercolor backgrounds and washes, and use them for other watercoloring techniques. $23.00 for the set.

Coincidentally, recently I received a Color Wheel stamp set by Waffle Flower and now had the perfect chance to use it. Here I created a color wheel with the Pigment Sprinkles. It is a great way to Swatch your stash and get a good feel of how your chosen media works.

I learned that the Daffodil Delight, yellow, actually looks orange, unless watered down quite a bit. I would like to re-do my color wheel and practice some more. But let's get on with the card!

I wanted to use Violet (Gorgeous Grape) and Yellow (Daffodil Delight) along with the Back on Your Feet stamp set. I haven't had the opportunity to color the giraffe and knew I could make a brown (sometimes called mud!) with violet and yellow. Just what I needed!

I prepped a piece of Fluid 100 with an Embossing Buddy to prevent random bits of embossing powder sticking to the paper. Next, I stamped the image using the Stamparatus and Versamark ink so I could double stamp and get a good clean image. I then sprinkled Copper Embossing Powder onto the sticky Versamark, gave it a good flick to get rid of extra powder and heat set.

I mixed Gorgeous Grape and Daffodil Delight separately on a pallet. Then I had a touch of the Gorgeous Grape to the Daffodil Delight a bit at a time until it looked like the right color.  I swatched these colors on a strip of the same Fluid 100 watercolor paper. This helps determine if your plan to going in the right direction.

I usually watercolor with a wet-on wet technique - that is - wetting the paper first and letting it soften a bit, so that when the watercolor paint is dropped in - it will spread to the wet areas. I always try to leave white areas and color in a very loose manner. The white areas give more interest and sparkle to the image.

The background was done with the Birch background stamp set. I used the same Fluid 100 paper and also heat embossed with Copper Embossing Powder.

Once dry, I tape to a board around the edges and with a wide brush wet the entire background. I then dropped in water-down Gorgeous Grape and Daffodil Delight Pigment Sprinkles being careful not to create mud (brown).

Finally I adhered the Birch background to an A2 size Whisper White card stock base. The giraffe image was die cut with a Stitched Rectangle Die and I used fun foam to create a smooth even layer.
