Let's get on with the hop!
Have you ever watched Food Network's show "Chopped"? The contestants are given a basket of various and unusual foods and must create a meal out of those items. Well, this felt a bit like that to me! We were given select items that had to be the focus of our cards and we could add a few Scrapbook.com items, if needed. For those of us who are card makers, we had from Scrapbook.com's brand: Nested Star Dies, 2 Christmas Stamp sets, Neehah white 80 lb. flat card front and pre-scored card bases, adhesives, 5 Hybrid Inks and domed blender tools. I've linked all items below so you can get a closer look.
To begin, I sketched out about 5 different designs and then I stamped all the images onto copy paper in various colors to get a feel for the proportions. I feel that I am basically a Clean and Simple card maker and have to stop when cards get too busy. I tried several different designs, but at last settled on this one.
The design ticked all the boxes: stars, 5 ink colors, stamp set, ink blending and lots of adhesive!
I started with 2 pieces of the Neenah 80lb. pre-cut card base (4 /1/4" X 5 1/2"). One piece I ran through the Big Shot with Lawn Fawn's Rectangle Stitched die to give some interest at the borders of the card. Next, I used Scrapbook.com's "Little Boxes" stencil with Ranger's Translucent Embossing Paste and "painted" the clear paste through the stencil in a random pattern. Once dry, I cut 3 star shapes from the panel using the 2 smallest the Scrapbook.com's Star dies.
On the second panel, I ink blended from top to bottom, Ballet Slipper, Cardinal Red, Pine Green and Midnight Blue behind the open areas of the top panel with the stars. I used Scrapbook.com's new foam ink-blending tools. If you have struggle with marks and ridges with other foam blending tools, give these a try. They are domed, so no hard edge!
The next step was to use Scrapbook.com's Tree Stencil with the foam blending tool to blend their Premium Pigment White Ink onto the areas with color.
I took one of the stamp sets from the Christmas Fun Card Sentiments and cut the first line off from the stamp, so only "It's Christmas" could be stamped by itself. It easy to put it back together to use a one piece in the future, but doing it this way is easier and makes the stamp more versatile.
Here are my tips for obtaining a good white embossed sentiment:
1. Treat the card stock with powder tool. I even use cornstarch with a paint brush. In this case I used EK Success Powder on Lawn Fawn's Black Licorice card stock.
2) Stamp the sentiment with a white pigment ink. I used Scrapbook.com's White Premium Pigment ink. I used my MISTI and stamped several times, but an acrylic block will work, too.
3) Quickly sprinkle with white detail embossing powder while still wet. I used Nuvo Detail Glacier White.
4) Preheat your heat tool for about 30 seconds. Heat set the sentiment starting from the back and move back and forth, on both sides.
5) Once melted, stop. Do not heat any more.
6) Let cool and dry. Gently remove the remaining powder/corn starch with a microfiber cloth or gently with your hand.
7) In this case, I trimmed it out with Avery Elle's sentiment strips. I really prefer a sentiment strip die, for I struggle with getting a straight, even cut by hand or cutter.

I added lots of Scrapbook.com 3D foam squares. They pull off the backer in a line so they were easy to add to the back of the card. I wanted to be sure the card will remain flat in the mail. At this point, the card was just put together one layer on top of the other.
The inside was the other "half" of the stamp set: "Eat, Drink & Be Merry (repeat whenever necessary)". Fun card to send to just the right person!

DeleteYou've done something I usually forget to do, decorate the inside. The card is brilliant. Like others have said my shopping list has grown again.
ReplyDeleteOver Christmas we try to remove all electronics and actually sit down talk and laugh together as a large family.
Thank you, Lynne. I am trying more and more to do a better job with decorating the inside. It's sounds perfect to go off the grid. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

What a nice comment, Tamara. Thank you!
DeleteWhat a cool way to make the star backgrounds. Really neat technique and appreciate your sharing. Favorite holiday memories are Midnight Mass, husband playing Santa for the last 42 years, and the lights of Christmas.
ReplyDeleteTricia Podmore
DeleteThank you, Tricia! Your memories sound wonderful!
DeleteWhat a beautiful Card!!! That's a lot of foam tape! Love the colors. I may have to try this for sure! Christmas for me is filled with so many memories. My favorite memory is being with my Grama and seeing what color her tree was each year … either traditional (multi color w/ silver icicles), or a Chrismon tree with white/gold ornaments (all of which were hand-made). This will be our 2nd Christmas without her. I would give anything to see her tree again (she was 102 the last time she put her tree up ... She would have been 104 on Dec. 3rd.) I miss her and all her traditions! (a.k.a. Corrie Hanson @ cozycorner1902@gmail.com)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Corrie. Your Grama sounded wonderful. I am sure you miss her greatly, especially at Christmas. TFS.
DeleteI love love love your card!!!! So creative!!!! My favorite Christmas tradition is when our family gathers for Christmas Eve.
ReplyDeleteYou're so sweet to leave such a nice comment, Cheryl. It sounds like a wonderful tradition.
DeleteThis would make a great shaker card too!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I thought so too, but I wanted part of the star to be off the edge of the card due to the sizes of the dies. Give it a try!
DeleteWhat a clever card; I love it!A favorite holiday tradition is decorating the tree with my family.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Isabel! Your tradition sounds perfect!
DeleteI like the color blending you did on the background!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Beth! One of my favorite techniques.
DeleteI appreciate your tip about using cornstarch to take the static out before using embossing powder. Hadn't heard that before.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pat. I heard it at an online class, but I don't remember who. Works pretty well.
DeleteGreat inking! We make wooden yard figures from Rudolph and add a new one each year.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chark. Your yard sounds amazing!
DeleteYour color combination is traditional, but fresh too. I really like what you did!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your comment! Good luck with the contest!
DeleteGreat card!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tina Marie!
DeleteSuch beautiful stenciling and card! I LOVE the colors!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Meghan! Good luck with the contest!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ink blending...love the raised panel design with the star windows. Love baking Christmas cookies with the kids.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mary-Anne! Baking is so much fun with kids!
DeleteI love the layers you created in the backgrounds.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kelly. I really appreciate your kind comment!
DeleteI love those bright ink blended stars!!They make me think of Christmas cookies, one of my favorite parts of Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Patti. My daughter said it looked like watermelon!
DeleteLove your color combination. One of my fondest memories of Christmas is that Santa always came while we were at church on Christmas Eve. I wondered how my mom knew if there was something missing. (her co-worker was Santa and he sometimes placed things on the tree instead of under it.)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandy. Sounds like a wonderful memory!
DeleteGreat card! Love the stenciled trees behind the stars. One of my favorite memories of Christmas from my youth was going to midnight mass and then coming home and opening one gift. It started a family tradition into our young adulthood until we all had families of our own.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Wanda! We did the same thing on Christmas Eve! One gift!
DeleteSo pretty and festive! Thanks for sharing!😊
ReplyDeleteThank you! Happy Thanksgiving!
DeleteWonderfully festive and happy card! Fun and creative design, love the addition of the blue to the traditional red and green colors. I'm looking forward to shopping and trying to find the special gift for each person on my list.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dana! The blue was tricky to work in, so glad you liked it.
ReplyDeleteglad you showed the inside of the card. I think I will try to make this card. I didn't realize all these cards were made with the same few products. I will def be shopping next week. One year I got off work on Christmas Eve and purchased a complete turkey meal from a restaurant and took it to my grandparents home. Just the 3 of us had a lovely meal and visit. They have been deceased for many years now but I still remember the joy that meal brought them.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eva! Yes, we were all given the same package and could add something from Scrapbook.com if we needed it. I hope you enjoy making the card! Sounds like a wonderful memory to cherish!
DeleteFantastic card! Love the stars and colors. Thanks for showing the inside. Wonderful design...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jeanne! I appreciate your comments. Good luck with the contest!
DeleteReally pretty how you used the stencils and the peek a poo images through the star cut windows. Christmas memories: Having parties to get together with friends and celebrate the season! One is put on by a friend that has an outpouring of ladies with ornament exchange that goes on for hours!! Fun by all!!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Thanks for the kind comment, too!

DeleteLove your Handmade Papercraft Holiday Parade Card.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gisela! I appreciate your comment!
ReplyDeleteLove the depth of your card. Tiny stencils added a lot.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vickie! I appreciate your comment!
DeleteLove the design!!! I may have to use that background idea on my cards...which I have yet to start...thought once the tree was up I would be inspired, but I started to organize in my space and well...not feeling inspired yet...but your card gives me a few ideas...
ReplyDeleteGreat, Lynda! I am glad you are slowly getting some inspiration....thank you for the great comment!
DeleteI like the texture you added to the front
ReplyDeletePretty design with the stars. I like the ink blending.
ReplyDeleteWe like to go Christmas caroling to nursing homes.
